Scandal at Canoe Sprint World Championships: Nazi anthem played for German duo at medal ceremony!

When the German anthem started to play for gold medal winners Anne Knorr and Debora Niche, the German audience were shocked to hear the verse "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles" ("Germany, Germany above all"), prohibited since 1952, since the Nazis had abused the lyrics written for Joseph Haydn's music.

"I am appalled. We can not accept it," German national coach Rainer Kiessler said in a television interview.

According to Kiessler's accounts, Hungarian organizers refused to let the national coach verify the anthem before playing it due to a technical problem.

Following World War II only the third verse of the German national anthem is sung, as the first two questionable verses were officially banned from the lyrics in 1952.
